Craig Ellwood’s 1965 Moore House was a diamond in the rough when we first visited the property. The residence, like a glass pavilion, had seamless connections to the landscape which was overgrown with decades of planting from previous owners. Remnants of the original landscape design existed including a koi pond and mature olive trees. Through an extensive renovation and redesign, the landscape architecture was developed to pay homage to the past yet modernize the spaces for an expanded program for our clients. The koi pond was redesigned and enlarged to appear to flow towards the swimming pool with a new wood bridge. The wood decking was continued adjacent to the swimming pool bisecting concrete pads leading one towards a custom fire feature, and BBQ counter. With a nod to Japanese modern aesthetic, bonsai pine, bamboo, gingko trees, gravel and boulders accentuate the space. In the backyard, the sloping hillside showcases a lush sub-tropical garden with meandering pathways and sitting areas.
